Daniel L. Wheelock moved to Moline, Illinois, where he became a very influential civic leader. He engaged in the bakery business, having the first steam bakery in the village. He was the first mayor of Moline, defeating John Deere by a margin of 368 to 192. Later, he moved on a farm in Iowa, but when ready to retire, returned to Moline, where he died.
