William Stockwell

Birth: about 1650, Scotland

Death: 1727/28, Sutton, Worcester, MA

Spouse: Sarah Lambert
Marriage: 14 Apr 1685, Ipswich, Essex, MA

  1. David Stockwell, born 1693/95, Ipswitch(?), MA

Notes:

Mabel Stockwell Kennedy, in "The Stockwell Genealogy", 1983, writes the following about William Stockwell:

"According to family tradition William Stockwell was born in Scotland about 1650, and as a young man he was induced aboard a ship sailing for America. On its arrival he was indentured in accord with the custom of the times for payment on his passage. After he gained his freedom, William married and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. Records of the births of the first two children are to be found at Ipswich, and while the others cannot be located in the town records it is known that the family was still living in Ipswich as late as 1700 when William Stockwell had a seat assigned to him at the town meetinghouse."

"In 1704 the town of Sutton, Massachusetts was granted by the Governor of the Province. Settlement was delayed by Queen Anne's War, but in 1714 the proprietors, in order to encourage settlement, offered 100 acres free to each family to be settled there within a specified period. A list dated 1717 of the thirty families to receive these grants includes the names of William Stockwell, John Stockwell, and William Stockwell."

"Records of the First Congregational Church at Sutton, Massachusetts show that "Widow Stockwell" was received into the church in 1729. Also, records of the Town Clerk at Sutton giving the assignment of seats in the town meetinghouse and dated December 20, 1731, make provision for a seat for "ye widdo Stockwell". Since provision is also made for each of the sons of William Stockwell, Sen., "ye widdo" would have to be the widow of William Stockell, Senior."
