Matthew G. Wheelock was a druggist, by occupation. In August, 1885, he removed from Pennsylvania to Grand Island, Nebraska. Later he made his way to Ravenna, Buffalo County, arriving there in April 1886.
He served in Company K, 151st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, and participated in the Battle of Gettysburg.
