The "Boston Marriages from 1700 to 1809", compiled by Edward W. McGlenen, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1977, show a marriage between Abel Wheelock and Catharine Baxter, 12 Oct 1788. Since other sources show that Abel was living in Boston (see notes for Joseph Wheelock), it is likely that this is the same individual. The Greenfield, MA, Vital Records report the death of Abel Wheelock, "17 May 1831, a. 63", and the Boston Columbian Centinal newspaper, 28 May 1831, reports the death of "Capt. Abel Wheelock, former resident of Boston, d. in Greenfield, aged 63." This ties together the Lancaster, Boston, and Greenfield individuals.
This is probably the Lieutenant Abel Wheelock who commanded a company in the 2nd Dragoons out of Fort Miflin and Province Island Barracks during the war of 1812. (Src: War of 1812 Discharge Certificates, Appendex I - List of Units and Subunits, The National Archives; online database at www.archives.gov, Mar 2006.)
From family records: Abel Wheelock was 1st Lieutenant 2nd Light Dragoons from 12 Mar 1812 to 1 June 1814. While serving in the War of 1812, Abel Wheelock with his company went to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was taken prisoner with six other officers, carried to England to be hung as hostages, but was finally exchanged and returned after being a prisoner on board a "Man of War" for six months. He also served in a company of militia at the time of Shay's insurrection, his name appearing on the pay roll of Captian Beamans Co., Col. Stearns Regiment for services rendered to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Jan and Feb 1787. (Src: Records of his great-granddaughter, Alice (Easton) Pray, kindly supplied by Nancy Jackson, June 2008.)
The children of Abel: Catharine, Charles, and Josiah B. are taken from the "Index of Obituaries in Massachusetts Centinel and Columbian Centinel, 1784-1840", Vol 5, American Antiquarian Society, Boston, G. K. Hall Co, 1961. All are referred to as dau. or son of Abel Wheelock. Though not proven, it is likely these are the children of Abel and Catherine. Another child of Abel, Abel, Jr., born about 1800, is proven to be a child of Abel and Catherine from his death record (MA 176:146).
The death of "Master Abel Wheelock", 21 Aug 1801, age 11 years, is recorded in "A Record of Deaths in Boston and Vicinity, 1799-1815", NEHGR, Vol 77, pg 232. Another death notice for Master Abel Wheelock, age 11, son of Mr. Abel Wheelock, and his brother, Joseph Baxter Wheelock, age 4, is found in the 1 Sep 1801 issue of "The Political Repository", Vol IV, issue 161. (online database at www.NewEnglandAncestors.org). This is somewhat problematic, since Master Abel Wheelock would have died in 1801, after his brother, Abel Wheelock, was born about 1800.
The Dorchester Vital Records record the death of "a child of Abel Whelock and his wife, died August the 5th 1803".
There is more information about this family in "The Records of Trinity Church, Boston, 1728-1830: Vol. II - 1728-1830", published 1982, Colonial Society of Massachusetts.
