Phineas' gravestone, in the Old Huntertown Cemetery, Hunter, Indiana, bears the following inscription: "Capt. Phineas Wheelock, an officer in the 4th Regiment, U.S. Infantry, during the War of 1812. Born Winchester, N.H. 1781. Died August 1st 1848. Aged 67 years."
According to "Dictionary of the United States Army, From It's Organization September 29, 1789, to March 2, 1903", by Francis B. Heitman, Volume I (publisher and date not given): "Phineas Wheelock was commisioned an ensign and second lieutenant in the 4th infantry, 3 Jan 1812; a first lieutenant 2 Sep 1813. He was honorably discharged 15 June 1815."
The Old Huntertown Cemetery also contains stones for:
(1) Catharine Wheelock De Long, daughter of "Phineas and Elizabeth", wife of Washington, b. Plattsburg, Clinton Co, NY, d. 21 Jan 1862, age 35 y 10 m 8 d.
(2) Louisa Wheelock Murphy, b. Apr 1811, Winchester, NH, d. 4 May 1849, daughter of Phineas and Elizabeth Wheelock.
