The death of Walter Wheelock is recorded in Cambridge, VT. It indicates that he was born in Hubbardston, MA; died 24 Apr 1867, age 83y 4m 16d. The implied birth date of 8 Dec 1783 confirms his identity as the son of Stephen Wheelock and Lucretia Newton.
It is presumed that this is the same Walter Wheelock that married Betsey Johnson in NH, and fathered at least one child there, and several others in Eden VT. It is also presumed that Walter married (2) Salome Jacobs in Cambridge, VT [See Note 1].
Walter must have come to Eden, VT before 1810, when he is enumerated there in the census. Several others from Hubbardston, MA, were also early settlers there.
His first wife, Betsey, probably died before 1815, when Walter married Salome Jacobs. Walter (age 63, born MA) and Salome (age 53, born NH) are enumerated in the 1850 Census, living in Eden, VT with Nelson W. (age 17), Lorrestice(?) (age 15) and Luellah S. (age 13), all presumed to be children of Walter and Salome, though their births are not in the VRs. Betsey and Amaziah are identified as children of Walter and Salome by their death records. Marcus Warren Waite identifies the following additional children, too old to appear with this family in the 1850 Census: Susan, Addison (m. Martha Pierce), Weston, and Julia. The 1830 census shows 8 children under 20 in the household.
Walter died of a fracture of the hip at age 83, and is buried in Smilie Cemetery in Cambridge, VT.
NOTES
[1] There are several relationships here that cannot be strictly proven from the records, but for which the weight of evidence is strong. These relationships are taken one at a time:
First, the Walter Wheelock that fathered children in New Hampshire and Vermont with Betsey ____ could be a different Walter from the one who married Salome Jacobs; implying the existence of two Walter Wheelocks in Eden at the time. The vital records show children born to Walter and Betsey Wheelock in Eden between the years 1806 and 1812. They show a marriage for Walter Wheelock and Salome Jacobs in 1815 which specifies that this is Walter's first marriage, implying a different Walter from the one that previously married Betsey. In addition, there are two death records for Walter Wheelock. One, recorded in Cambridge, specifies that Walter is the wife of Salome, died 4 Apr 1864, ae 83. The second, recorded in Eden, does not specify the spouse, gives a death date of 24 Apr 1864, ae 83y 4m 16d, and states that he was born in Hubbardston, MA.
However, the argument for a single Walter Wheelock is stronger. The Census records for 1810 and 1820 show only a single Walter. Census records for 1830, 1840, and 1850 show only Walter and his son, Walter, Jr. In addition, it is very likely the two death records are one and the same. The dates "4 Apr 1864" and "24 Apr 1864" are suspiciously similar, and the fact that both are 83 years old implies a transcription error, probably on the "4 Apr 1864" date. The Vermont VRs are filled with duplicate death records.
The Vermont VRs are clear that several children were born to Walter Wheelock and Betsey ____, but is this the Betsey Johnson that married Walter Wheelock in 1806, Marlborough, Cheshire Co, NH? The census records show that Walter's parents lived in Cheshire County, NH, in 1800. Land records confirm their presence in Alstead, Cheshire Co, NH in 1796 (Cheshire Deeds, Vol 26, pg 170, 174, 253). Walter's brother, Emory, was married in Cheshire County; and his sister, Tabitha, may also have been married there. The first child of Walter and Betsey, Walter, Jr., was born in NH in 1806, according to the Vermont VRs. These facts strongly suggest the conclusion that Walter's wife, Betsey, of Eden, VT, was in fact Betsey Johnson. At least one published genealogy draws the same conclusion: "Gregory Stone Genealogy: Ancestry and Descendants of Dea. Gregory Stone of Cambridge, Mass., 1320-1917", by J. Gardner Bartlett.
Given the facts, the provisional conclusion is that there was only one Walter Wheelock in the area, and that Walter's first wife, Betsey Johnson, died between 1812 and 1815, and the marriage record to his second wife, Salome, in 1815, is in error when it states that this was his first marriage.
