Arthur Wheelock began business life at the age of seventeen, with the firm of C.A. & S.M. Wheelock Company, continuing as bookkeeper and assistant buyer until 1883, when he became agent and a director of the Calumet Woolen Company, and succeeded his father as treasurer in 1889. In 1905 he liquidated the Calumet Woolen Company and bought their Calumet Mill, and the same year he organized the Stanley Woolen Company, of which he was president.

He later became president of the Putnam Woolen Company; vice-president and director of the Blackstone National Bank; life-trustee of the Uxbridge Savings Bank, and a trustee of the Prospect Hill Cemetery Corporation. He was promoter and first president of the Uxbridge and Northbridge Electric Company; and was a life trustee of the Uxbridge Free Public Library.

(Source "History of Worcester County, Massachusetts", editted by Ellery Bicknell Crane, Lewis Historical Publishing Company, NY and Chicago, 1924.)

The old Stanley Woolen Company building still stands on Rt. 16 in Uxbridge, MA (July 2000). The huge building, in decay, windows broken, is a powerful reminder of the great influence the woolen mills had on this region of the country. A sign, posted by the Blackstone National Heritage Corridor, reads as follows:

"Oral history Inteview with Philip, Arthur, and Stricland Wheelock, March 1994: "Our family has grown..dates back to 1768 when our family moved to Uxbridge. Our family has been very active as far as school boards, library, and many other town functions. In 1883 to 1905, the Wheelock family ran the mill as Calumet Woolen. In 1905, Stanley Woolen Co. was incorporated and named after Stanley Wheelock...Ever since we were teenagers we worked in the mill, doing various jobs, learning the business, so we got to know the people, and they knew us..."
