Josephs obituary, published in the Leicester local newspaper, reads as follows:
Joseph Wheelock, one of the oldest citizens of Leicester died on Saturday last, aged 81 years. He came into this section as a pioneer, settled for two years in Perry and then came to the town of Leicester where he resided until his death. He was an energetic man in business and was widely known and respected.
From a book entitled "Biographical Review, Biographical Sketches of Leading Citizens of Livingston and Wyoming Counties, New York", Boston, Biographical Publishing Company, 1895, we find:
Joseph left Shaftsbury, VT. for New York in 1828, travelling by means of wagons to Troy, and then by canal to Rochester. The household goods were taken on a flatboat on Genesee River directly to Leicester, while the family took the stage to Geneseo, and then hired a team to complete the journey to the town of Perry, Wyoming County, New York. Here he bought land, and resided until 1831, when he sold out and purchased a farm adjoining the Pine Tavern estate at the west part of the town of Leicester. This farm was a forlorn-looking place, with only log buildings, but in a few years many improvements were made, and frame buildings were erected. At the end of two years Mr. Wheelock rented the Pine Tavern, the property of Captain Horatio Jones, including a large tract of land, where, in connection with tavern-keeping, he engaged extensively in farming. In 1839 he sold out his interests and went to Mount Morris, where he leased the American House, which he carried on for two years. He then came to Cuylerville, bought property, and engaged in the mercantile business. In 1855 he went to California, joining two of his sons who had previously gone there. Returning to Cuylerville the following year, he here led a retired life, and died when eighty one years of age.
