The Martha Wheelock whose baptism is recorded in Northborough, MA, 6 May 1787 is probably the same Martha Wheelock that married Richard Gage, and had children in Bridgton, ME between 1809 and 1818. Supporting evidence: (1) her birth date, recorded in Maine aligns with her baptism date recorded in Northborough, and (2) her brother Jesse had a daughter named after her (Martha Louise Gage Wheelock).
Since the Maine Vital Records variously refer to the mother of Richard Gage's children as Martha Wheelock or Abigail Wheelock, it is reasonable to suspect that these two women might be one and the same. But further examination of the vital records reveals that the mother of first two children of Richard Gage is listed as Abigail, and the mother of all subsequent children is listed as Martha. If Martha and Abigail were the same person, the reference to Martha and Abigail would probably appear in a more random ordering. Abigail's second daughter was born 12 Mar 1807. There is Maine death record for Abigail Wheelock, born 17 Dec 1782 and died 13 Mar 1807, suggesting Abigail died shortly after the birth of her second child, and that Richard Gage must have married Martha Wheelock, probably Abigail's sister. These suspicions are confirmed by a book of embroidery by Betty Ring, "American Samplers and Pictorial Needlework", Vol 1, pg 256 which references a piece of needlework done by Martha Maria Gage, and/or her sister, Abigail Wheelock Gage. The needlework is a memorial to Mrs. Abigail Gage, their mother, who died 12 Mar 1807, at the young age of 24. (Note that this date differs from the 13 Mar 1807 date given by the Maine VRs). The book goes on to state that Richard Gage then married Abigail's sister.
