Joseph Miles
Birth: about 1635
Death: 1693
- Essex County, Massachusetts, Probate File Papers, 1631-1881, case 18433, Joseph Miles (1693); at AmericanAncestors.org (https://www.americanancestors.org/DB515/i/13788/18433-co1/30412063 : accessed 28 Jan 2025); also at Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/9069/records/3537203 : 28 Jan 2025).
Spouse: Mary Wheelock
Marriage: 28 Jan 1660/61, Medfield, Norfolk Co, MA
- "Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988," database with images, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/2495/images/40400_274679-00208 : accessed 30 Oct 2023), Boston, Registry of Births, Deaths, 1630-1699, image 206 of 220, Joseph Miles and Mary Whelock (1660); Boston town clerk.
Spouse: Exercise Felton
Marriage: 7 Nov 1664, Salem, Essex Co, MA
- "Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1626-2001", FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L979-WQBD : accessed 2 January 2025), Essex County births, marriages, deaths 1654-1795, Joseph Miles and Exercise Felton (1664); FHL 877468, image 244 of 814; see also Salem Vital Records to 1850, Vol. 4 Marriages, p. 87.
- Mary Miles, born probably 1 Apr 1666, Salem, Essex Co, MA
- Susana Miles, born 7 Oct 1667, Salem, Essex Co, MA
- Abigail Miles, born 5 Jul 1669, Salem, Essex Co, MA
- Mary Miles, born 27 Mar 1671, Salem, Essex Co, MA
- Elizabeth Miles, bapt. Nov 1673, Salem, Essex Co, MA
- Sarah Miles, bapt. May 1677, Salem, Essex Co, MA
Notes:
His parents are not known.
After Mary died, he married Exercise Felton in Salem, "7:9m:1664", or 7 November 1664 on the modern calender.1
Five daughters of Joseph and Exercise are recorded in Salem, one of whom, Mary, presumably died young, since they had another daughter named Mary, born later. Two other daughters are listed as children of Joseph and Exercise in the Salem VRs: Susana and Abigail.2 They had a fifth daughter, Sarah Miles, who married Thomas Elkins - proven by the will of Exercise Miles, dated 17 July 1704. In her will she called Thomas Elkins her "son-in-law ... who married my Daughter" and made him sole executor of her estate.3 Thomas Elkins married Sarah Miles in Salem, 14 Jan. 1701.4 This was likely the Sarah Miles who was baptized in Salem, May 1677.5
A sixth daughter, Elizabeth, baptized in Salem, is presumed to be a child of Joseph and Experience based on her baptism date, which fills a gap in the birth sequence for Excercise.5
See also History of Salem for another take on the children of Joseph and Exercise,6 and A Genealogical History of the Felton Family ... for yet another take.7
Joseph made his will 20 May 1692, witnessed by Edward Berry, Catherine Berry, and Simon Willard. In it he left five shillings each to his four daughters; and his house, cow, and whatever swine he had to his wife, Execercize, whom he named sole executrix. The inventory of his estate was prepared by Simon Willard and Edward Berry; and was presented to the probate court on 6 June 1693.8
