William S. Tilden, "The History of Medfield, Massachusetts, 1650-1886", published 1886, writes of Samuel as follows: "Samuel married at Rehoboth in 1678 Sarah Kendrick. He inherited the original Wheelock estate on the cornor of North Street. He died in 1698, and his widow married in 1703 Josiah Rockwood. The place passed into the possession of his brother Eleazar."

Marriage of Samuel and Sarah:

The marriage of Samuel Wheelock and Sarah Wheelock was recorded in Medfield, but apparently not in Rehoboth, despite the fact that Sarah was born there, and her parents lived there. Despite this omission, Sarah and Samuel were almost certainly married in Rehoboth, not Medfield. The evidence is as follows:

A copy of the Medfield marriages and intentions from 1651 to 1875 was made in 1878 (the original not available online). The marriage is recorded in this copy with an indication that they were married in Rehoboth, as was Samuel's brother, Eleazer and his wife Elizabeth Fuller. Both couples were married by Mr. Daniel Smith, a resident of Rehoboth.¹ For some reason, the place of marriage was not included in the Medfield Vital Records to 1850, despite the fact that it was included for Eleazer and Elizabeth.²

Another copy of the Medfield births, deaths, and marriages from 1651 to 1819 was made about 1850. This copy also states that Samuel and Sarah were married "before Mr. Daniel Smith", as was Eleazar Wheelock and Elizabeth Fuller. It does not state where Samuel and Sarah were married. Both couples were married in 1678, but since Eleazar's exact month and day of marriage is unknown, it is not known whether the two couples were married on the same day. Interestingly, all other marriages in 1678 and 1679 were performed by Mr. Ralph Wheelock, presumably in Medfield (since nothing otherwise is indicated). Since Mr. Daniel Smith was a resident of Rehoboth, and Mr. Ralph Wheelock was a resident of Medfield, the implication is that Samuel and Sarah were married in Rehoboth.³

Tilden, in History of Medfield states that they were married in Rehoboth.⁴

Carlyle Capron Wheelock in his manuscript "Wheelock Genealogy" indicates that they were married in Rehoboth, perhaps following Tilden in History of Medfield.⁵

Marcus Waite in The Wheelock Family of Calais, Vermont does not indicate a place of marriage for Samuel and Sarah.⁶

Water T. Wheelock in The Wheelock Family in America states that were married in Medfield.⁷

Samuel's birth date is recorded in the Dedham Vital Records as: "22 of 7th Month 1642".
