Abijah attained the rank of Captain in the Revolutionary War. Among many other engagements, he marched on the Lexington alarm of 19 April 1775, in Captain Jacob Davis' regiment, Col Ebenezer Learned's regiment, service 13 days.

Abijah was one of the original proprietors of Calais, Washington Co, VT. He sold all of his rights in Calais to Col. Jacob Davis, 9 June 1786.⁸

On 3 March 1795, Abijah Lamb with two other men posted bond on the appointment of Ezekial Richardson as the guardian for Priscilla Pottle, age 13, daughter of Brimsley Pottle.⁷

On 28 May 1795, Abijah and his wife Priscilla sold "all the right title and interest in the real estate and lands devised by Josiah Partridge late of said Brookfield deceased to the said Priscilla his Daughter".⁵

His will, written 28 June 1821, and proved 7 Sep 1824, leaves bequests to his wife, Hannah, his son Jared Lamb, daughters Lucy Wells, Olive Brown, and Rhoda Thompson, granddaughter Esther Minor, daughter of his daughter, Roxey Minor, and his son Abijah Lamb, whom he appoints executor.⁹

Research Notes:

This is no doubt the Abijah Lamb that married Priscilla (Partridge) Pottle, widow of Bemsley Pottle who died in 1791. The marriage is recorded in Brookfield as between Mrs. Priscilla Pottle and Capt. David Lamb of Charlton, 6 March 1794, intention not recorded.¹

However, just four days earlier an intention was filed in Brookfield for Capt. Abijah Lamb of Charlton & Mrs. Priscilla Pottle of Brookfield, 2 March 1794.²

This apparent discrepancy between David and Abijah is made particularly confusing, because the daughter of Priscila (Partridge) Pottle, also named Priscilla Pottle, married the son of Capt. Abijah Lamb, also named Abijah Lamb, on 28 Apr 1799.³

However, land records help to clarify the situation. On 7 Apr 1794, Abijah Lamb and his wife, Priscilla, sold property to Aaron Wheelock.⁴ At first, it seems this must be Abijah Lamb, Jr., son of Capt.Abijah Lamb and his first wife, Betty Wheelock. Abijah, Jr. was born in 1777 and married Priscilla Pottle in 1799. However, Abijah Lamb, Jr. would have been only 17 at the time - not old enough to engage in land transactions - and had not yet married Priscilla Pottle. Another deed, dated 28 May 1795, records the sale by Abijah Lamb of Charlton and his wife Priscilla to Daniel Bullard of Brookfield "all the right title and interest in the real estate and lands devised by Josiah Partridge late of said Brookfield deceased to the said Priscilla his Daughter".⁵ This links his wife Priscilla to her father, Josiah Partridge, which confirms that she was the same Priscilla that was widow of Bemsley Pottle.⁶

Another record ties Abijah Lamb to Priscilla (Partridge) Pottle and her daughter, Priscilla Pottle. On 3 March 1795, Abijah Lamb with two other men posted bond on the appointment of Ezekial Richardson as the guardian for Priscilla Pottle, age 13, daughter of Brimsley Pottle.⁷ Priscilla was the daughter of Abijah's wife, Priscilla (Partridge) (Pottle) Lamb by her first husband, Bemsley Pottle. Young Priscilla would later marry her step brother Abijah Lamb, Jr. on 28 Apr 1799.³

In sum, it appears that the Brookfield marriage record between Capt. David Lamb of Charlton is in error, and should have referred to Capt. Abijah Lamb, not David. Alternatively, Abijah may have also gone by the name David, though no other record has yet been found that refers to him as David.
